Kiaora e te whānau. My name is Hayley Newman and I am in my 6th year of teaching at Berkley. I am originally from Te Tairāwhiti - the East Coast, but now call Hillcrest home.

Coming from a whānau that has a deep interest and passion for education, it was only a matter of time before I caught the ‘teacher bug’!. I can safely say that I absolutely love being a teacher. I have been very fortunate to have started my teaching career at Berkley; it has provided me with the experience and knowledge to ‘take up the challenge’ as an educator.

Something that I really enjoy about my job are the relationships that I get to develop with the students who enter my classroom. I believe that positive relationships are a must for the emerging adolescent to thrive and have the opportunity to be their very best selves, so I make this a priority.

Apart from being a homeroom teacher, I am also a part of the PE team and the Kapa Haka team – both are rewarding in their own ways and allow me to get to know more students across the school and experience the satisfaction of seeing students make progress and be confident in their abilities within areas outside of the classroom.

Ngā manaakitanga,

Whaea Hayley.
