Carl Rayner
I’m a Media Specialist Teacher at Berkley, with more than 25 years of experience working across education, digital technology, media and the performing arts in New Zealand and internationally.
Before returning to Berkley in 2024, I spent six years as a Digital Technology Coach at St Joseph’s Institution International School in Singapore, where I helped develop the school’s Digital Technologies programme and co-founded ESTV, a student television programme designed to give young people authentic opportunities to create, communicate and tell stories through media.
At Berkley, I teach Media across the school and lead Berkley TV, where students work both in front of and behind the camera to produce programmes, films, interviews and coverage of school life. I’m particularly passionate about giving students access to professional tools and real-world creative experiences while building confidence, teamwork and technical skills.
Berkley is also a familiar place for me — earlier in my career I spent four years here as Head of Performing Arts — so returning to the school more than two decades later has felt a little like coming home.
Outside the classroom, my interests include filmmaking, music, technology and sport, and I’m always interested in exploring new ways technology can help students create things they’re genuinely proud of.
