Kia ora

My name is Mr Purcell and I am the proud teacher of Room 14 in the Rangahau team. This is currently my third year teaching at Berkley, having previously worked for the New Zealand Principals’ Federation in Wellington.

I spent my childhood in Tauranga (and briefly in Toronto, Canada!), attending Matua Primary and then Otumoetai Intermediate and College. I’ve always had an interest in teaching thanks to my mother who has been a teacher in New Zealand, Jordan, China, and Vietnam! Knowing the positive impact that I can have on the education and lives of my students is what drives me forward each day. Being there for those “lightbulb” moments when a student grasps a new strategy or concept is such a satisfying feeling!

Football is a major part of my life. I play on Saturdays, coach on Sundays and I run the Berkley boys’ football team. Aside from that, if you’re a literacy fanatic then I am also responsible for the school’s Lit Quiz teams.

I’m a huge believer in Berkley’s motto of “Take Up the Challenge” and I will always encourage and support my students to put themselves forward for the wide range of opportunities on offer here.
